Korea Singers Association President Urges BTS To ‘Reconsider’ Hiatus – Billboard

Korea Singers Association president Lee Ja Yeon reportedly released a statement to BTS and HYBE Labels on Wednesday (June 22) asking the group to reconsider their hiatus, just weeks after the septet announced that they will be taking a much-needed break to focus on solo projects.

“I am overwhelmed with my fear and concern that the ‘BTS Hallyu Wave,’ a movement that possesses the greatest soft cultural power the world has ever witnessed, will soon disappear,” the statement read, according to Allkpop. “In the years before this movement was born, it was believed that finding the ‘Next Beatles’ would be a very difficult achievement, and now, we’ve reached a point where it’s hard to wait for the ‘Next BTS.’ ‘ to emerge anytime soon. Therefore, there is great concern that Hallyu’s heartbeat will cease.

“The decision to release this statement was not an easy one,” the statement continues. “Would you please reconsider the decision to go on a group hiatus, for the future of the South Korean music industry?”

Lee Ja Yeon concluded, “If BTS disappears, the missionaries of Hallyu and Korean culture, ARMY, will also disappear. South Korea’s tourism industry will suffer and it will be difficult to look forward to a future for South Korea as a cultural hub in Asia. The special laws assigned to the sports and classical music and arts industries for compulsory military service should be extended to popular culture as well. The need for attention and action regarding this existing problem is pressing. The South Korean government and national assembly should pay attention to this matter so that the Hallyu boom can continue to spread and BTS can continue to actively promote as a group. Seek a review of existing military service laws.”

The statement came amid news on June 14 that BTS will be going on an indefinite “hiatus” to allow each member time to focus on solo projects. “We have to accept that we have changed,” RM said in the lengthy announcement video. “To me, it was like BTS was within my reach until ‘On’ and ‘Dynamite,’ but after ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance,’ I didn’t know what kind of group we were anymore.” He said that whenever he writes lyrics and songs, the story and the message that he wants to spread is very important, “but it was like that was gone now. I don’t know what kind of story I should tell now.”

A spokesperson for the group clarified BTS’s description of the breakup in a statement to Billboard: “To be clear, they are not on hiatus, but will be taking time to explore some solo projects at this time and will remain active in a number of different formats.” .

Jungkook also said during a live broadcast on the South Korean app V LIVE that BTS will continue to be active as a group, including their current effort of filming their web series Run BTS, according to the representative.

Following Lee Ja Yeon’s statement, BTS’s loyal fanbase ARMY took to Twitter to share their thoughts, criticizing the Korea Singers Association for ignoring artists’ wishes for status and financial gain.

Check out some ARMY reactions below.

The system needs a complete makeover, starting with the Korean singers’ association. Disgusting that they completely ignore what artists say just so they can use them for money. I’m glad that BTS refuses to follow that and focuses on itself. https://t.co/Fp8E6psMxg

I don’t care about the hallyu wave, the needs of the Korean industry, or the Korean singers’ association. and i definitely didn’t sign up to be the “hallyu culture army missionaries” tf. I’m only here for bts and bts. and that includes supporting their well-deserved rest.

Now I’m a bit worried about the pressure BTS might be feeling due to the Korea Singers Association telling them to keep the hallyu wave alive, but I have to remember and trust Jimin’s words 🥲♥️pic.twitter.com/g9RZiibIdc
