“Hate and prejudice against any marginalized group is historically political,” the message read, before noting that prejudice goes beyond “polls” and is reflected in society. “You are either perpetuating love or perpetuating hate. Anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric is hate, whether it’s in politics or in a locker room conversation.”

The band continued: “Politicians and other powerful people have a choice. Just like walking into a nightclub full of human beings and taking their lives was a choice for hate. If you spit hate and echo, expect an infinite number of possible outcomes. Including people coming to the conclusion that maybe it’s time to start holding people accountable for the way they use their power to divide and normalize hate.”

Paramore concluded her statement by sending love to Colorado Springs. “The LGBTQIA+ community and the families and friends who have lost valuable people who are more than a statistic or a headline,” she wrote.

A 22-year-old gunman opened fire at Club Q on Saturday night (November 19), killing five people and wounding at least 18 others before he was subdued by patrons and arrested by police. The club issued a statement on Sunday, saying they were “devastated by the senseless attack on our community.”

Two firearms, including a “long rifle,” were found at the Club Q scene, Colorado Springs Police Department Chief Adrian Vasquez said. The violence is the sixth mass murder this month and comes in a year that saw the nation rocked by the deaths of 21 people in a shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas.
